With profound sadness, the University of Iowa community joins family, friends, teammates, and loved ones in mourning the loss of Kari (Mueller) Pekar, a beloved former Hawkeye volleyball student-athlete whose courageous battle with cancer came to an end on June 10, 2026. She was 33.
While her passing leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, Kari’s life remains a powerful testament to resilience, determination, and unwavering kindness. Throughout her journey, she inspired countless individuals not only through her accomplishments as an athlete but through the grace and positivity she displayed in every chapter of her life.
A proud Iowa City native, Kari’s passion for volleyball and commitment to excellence led her to the University of Iowa, where she competed for the Hawkeyes from 2011 through 2014. As a defensive specialist, she became known for her tireless work ethic, team-first mentality, and relentless dedication. Her contributions on the court included hundreds of career digs, assists, and service aces, but those statistics tell only a small part of her story.
To teammates and coaches, Kari was far more than an athlete. She was a trusted friend, a source of encouragement, and a leader whose actions consistently reflected humility and integrity. Her positive attitude and willingness to support others helped create lasting bonds that extended well beyond her years in collegiate athletics.
Away from volleyball, Kari’s greatest accomplishments were found in the relationships she nurtured. She was a devoted wife, cherished daughter, loyal friend, and compassionate presence in the lives of many. Her infectious smile, caring spirit, and ability to uplift others left lasting impressions wherever she went.
Even during her battle with cancer, Kari demonstrated extraordinary courage. She faced each challenge with remarkable strength, inspiring those around her through her resilience and determination. Her journey became a source of hope for many, reminding others that courage is not the absence of fear but the willingness to keep moving forward despite it.
As tributes continue to pour in from former teammates, coaches, and friends, one theme remains constant: Kari made people feel valued, loved, and supported. Her legacy is defined not only by her athletic achievements but by the kindness she shared and the lives she touched.
Though her life was far too short, Kari Pekar’s influence will endure through the countless memories she created, the friendships she cultivated, and the inspiration she provided to everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Rest in peace, Kari Pekar. Your strength, grace, and beautiful spirit will never be forgotten.
